Open mat etiquette and hygiene
An open mat is the best way to meet other clubs and training partners. A few simple habits keep the mat safe and the atmosphere good for everyone.
Before you go
Message the host club in advance and ask whether visitors are welcome and whether the slot has a fee. Arrive on time and introduce yourself to the coach or the person running the session. As a guest you follow the gym’s rules, so ask about anything unclear.
Hygiene
Cleanliness is respect for others. Come in a clean gi or rashguard, wash your hands and feet, keep your nails short, and don’t train when ill or with a skin infection. Wear footwear when you step off the mat, for example to the toilet, and never walk on the mat with bare feet that have been outside it.
On the mat
Ask a partner to roll rather than assuming. Start relaxed and match the pace to your partner’s size and experience, with a beginner you control, you don’t crush. Tap early and release the moment your partner taps. If someone is at risk of getting hurt, stop immediately. Safety always comes before a win.
Afterwards
Help put the mats and space back in order, pay the drop-in fee if asked, and thank the hosts. Open mats work because clubs open their doors to each other, so give back however you can. That is how you stay welcome next time too.
